Illegal Haitian Immigrants allowed to stay in U.S.: What’s next?

Not surprisingly, the Obama administration has decided to offer protected status to Haitians in the United States illegally. This status is often given to people who face going back to a country affected by a natural disaster or war. Many will agree with this decision and consider it humane. I think it’s insane.

For Haitians in the United States legally, extending their visas is the right thing to do. For Haitians in need of medical service due to injuries from the earthquake, I support bringing them to the United States temporarily so they can receive the treatment they need to survive. For those here illegally? They deserve nothing more than a plane ride home.

I know this isn’t a popular sentiment. Almost everyone is concerned with helping the citizens of Haiti, which is understandable. What isn’t understandable is why we would want to suspend the deportation process and reward law-breakers. Of course, if you’re a liberal, you probably don’t think there’s anything wrong with illegal aliens spitting on our laws.

What struck me is this excerpt from the story about the Haitian amnesty halted deportations.

Temporary protected status is granted to foreigners who may not be able to return safely to their country because of a natural disaster, armed conflict or other reasons.

First, these “temporary” bans on deportation will be extended indefinitely. Once the time nears for them to end, you will see sympathizers point to the poverty and lasting effects of the earthquake. If you think they will ever be deported, you’re kidding yourself. Second, check out the “other reasons” at the end of the excerpts. It seems like it could be a great way to offer piecemeal amnesty. Can’t you just picture the liberal argument: “We can’t send these undocumented workers back to their home country to face extreme poverty and hunder. It’s inhumane!”

I can see this argument being applied to illegal aliens from a variety of countries. Let’s call it stealth amnesty. It’s going to happen, and when it does, don’t say I didn’t warn you.
