People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has said and done some stupid things over the years, but their latest stunt may have topped them all. The organization filed a lawsuit against Sea World, charging that the park is violating the 13th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution by “enslaving” whales.

“It’s a new frontier in civil rights,” said Jeff Kerr, PETA general counsel, who described the hearing as a “historic day.”

“Slavery does not depend on the species of the slave any more than it depends on race, gender or ethnicity,” he argued. “Coercion, degradation and subjugation characterize slavery and these orcas have endured all three.”

One would hope that this lawsuit is thrown out quickly, but just imagine what would happen if they won. No more aquariums, zoo’s, circuses, or businesses that “employ” animals.

I started this blog so I could share my opinions, inform people, and start some interesting discussions. Topics such as Obamacare, illegal immigration, and Cap-and-Trade are frequent topics. They are certainly worthy of discussion, but I realize that maybe I should broaden the scope of the blog and try to help my dedicated readers. Let’s think of it as a public service announcement.

My first attempt to save you from yourself was inspired by reading about the dangers of excessive drinking. We often hear about drunk driving and health problems, but how often do you read something like this:

State police have charged a central Pennsylvania man with public drunkenness after he was seen giving mouth-to-mouth “resuscitation” to a long-dead opossum along a highway.

Trooper Jamie Levier says several witnesses saw 55-year-old Donald Wolfe, of Brookville, near the animal along Route 36 in Oliver Township Thursday about 3 p.m. The trooper says one person saw Wolfe kneeling before the animal and gesturing as though he were conducting a seance, while another saw the mouth-to-mouth attempt.

Levier says Wolfe was “extremely intoxicated” and “did have his mouth in the area of the animal’s mouth, I guess.”

Oliver Township is about 65 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.

There’s a lesson to be learned here: When you start to think you can resuscitate roadkill, you’ve had too much to drink. Don’t let this happen to you.

Let’s hope the Obama administration is better at national security than State Dinner security. At a recent State dinner, a Virginia couple was able to crash the party, then have several photos taken with celebrities and administration officials. During the Bush administration, a member of the White House social office was usually at the initial check point to prevent unwanted guests from attending, but the Obama administration does not take such precautions.

The couple, Tareq Salahi and Michaele Salahi of Virginia obviously meant no harm. They were likely looking for a fun night out and some publicity for their attempt to be on the TV show “The Real Housewives of D.C..” Despite this, it does raise concerns. What if someone with bad intentions had crashed the party? As one security expert said:

“While the couple did pass through a magnetometer to detect weapons, they could have assassinated the president or vice president using other means — anthrax, for example. The additional security checks referred to by the Secret Service spokesman screen for such items as radiological contamination but would not detect secreted biological weapons.”

As for the Salahi’s, here is a link to one of Michaele Salahi’s Facebook pages, along with some pictures of the special evening. Again, these pictures show the unfettered access the couple received, and should lead to some major changes in security.

Is it really appropriate for a symbol of oppression to be celebrated as just another cultural difference?

I just read a very strange article I wanted to share. It seems that global warming is leading more women in the Phillipines to become prostitutes. Yes, you read correctly!

The article states that 92 million people live in the Phillipines, and the population is expected to exceed 140 million in the next 40 years. Most of these people, approximately 60%, live near the coast. They are depleting the nations resources due to their population growth, which is causing more women to move from fishing to prostitution. I’m not sure if it’s me, but I think I’m missing something.

If the population grows steadily, isn’t a depletion of natural resources expected? Wouldn’t this be exacerbated by a population distribution which puts more strain on coastal rather than inland areas? Aren’t environmentalists who believe this nonsense as intelligent as an amoeba? I say yes to all three questions.

I don’t doubt there is more prostitution in the Phillipines, but by attempting to correlate two unrelated occurences, environmentalists are doing themselves a disservice. Whoever came up with this idea should have taken a statistics class. If they had, they would have learned that correlation doesn’t imply causation.

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger spoke at a democratic gathering recently, and was heckled by the crowd. One notable instance was when Assemblyman Tom Ammiano shouted, “you lie!” Well, it looks like the Governor wasn’t too happy with what transpired at the gathering.

In a veto message to Tom Ammiano, Schwarzenegger decided to get poetic by including an acrostic poem in the body of the letter. As you might know, an acrostic poem uses the first letter from each line to spell a word. Take a look at the message below:

You definitely have to give the gov points for creativity!
