I usually don’t watch music award shows any more. As a fan of rock and indie bands, there usually isn’t much that would interest me. Thankfully, I also missed this year’s American Music Awards. I could certainly do without seeing Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Janet Jackson, and of course, Adam Lambert. As a matter of fact, if it wasn’t for Adam Lambert’s performance, I probably wouldn’t have known about one thing that occurred on the show, which tells you something about the quality you can expect.

As you might have heard, Adam Lambert’s performance involved him groping women, kissing the male keyboardist, then shoving a dancer’s face into his crotch to simulate oral sex. The performance was edited for the west coast audience, and Good Morning America has cancelled a scheduled concert because of his antics. What’s Adam Lambert’s reaction? He feels discriminated against!

Lambert had this to say about the reaction to his performance:

“If it’s going to be edited, then, in a way, that’s discrimination. I don’t mean to get political, but Madonna, Britney [Spears] and Christina [Aguilera] weren’t edited.”

He went on to add, “It’s a shame. Female entertainers have been risqué for years.

“Honestly, there’s a huge double standard . . . It’s 2009, it’s time to take more risks. It’s about entertainment. People want to be surprised. It’s too bad that people are so scared.”

It’s about entertainment? The last time I checked, people like Britney Spears needed to resort to side-show routines in an attempt to cover up the fact that they are talentless hacks. This is what Adam Lambert aspires to? By the way, I disagree with his assertion that women aren’t criticized for their behavior on stage. Does anyone remember Britney Spears performance with Christina Aguilera and Madonna at the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards? If you missed it, take a look:

If I remember correctly, this performance received a lot of criticism. As for Adam Lambert’s discrimination claim, it is nonsense. However, I couldn’t agree more with his comment about people wanting to be entertained. Although, there are some musicians who are able to entertain solely with their voice, instruments, and lyrics. There’s no need to turn their performance into a circus. The fact that Adam Lambert feels this is necessary to entertain an audience speaks volumes about his lack of talent and his knowledge of this fact.
