After being suspended for giving campaign contributions to 3 liberal Democrats without MSNBC’s permission, Keith Olbermann will be back on the air. The suspension lasted for only two shows, and follows a great deal of criticism about the move.

I don’t like Keith Olbermann, I don’t watch his show, and politically, we’re about as opposite as you can get. With that said, suspending him was absolute nonsense. MSNBC’s policy on political donations is absolutely necessary for reporters and anchors who are trusted to be neutral and detached from the news they are reporting. Keith Olbermann is anything but neutral, and only an idiot wouldn’t realize that he is an unabashed liberal. By the way, there’s nothing wrong with that, since his show is opinion-based.

Keith Olbermann, Rachel Maddow, Chris Matthews, Rush Limbaugh, Bill O’Reilly, Sean Hannity, Mark Levin, and Glenn Beck are all examples of individuals who have strong opinions and make no effort to appear unbiased. That should be the key when deciding to level suspensions. If the show is obviously slanted ideologically, then a charge of bias isn’t founded. However, if someone is supposed to be acting in a nonbiased capacity, then I would argue that political contributions should result in a suspension or termination.

MSNBC talking head Chris Matthews is a buffoon. If you haven’t realized it by this point, check out the video above. In it, he talks about the “strange venue” Barack Obama chose for his speech, and he questioned why the President would visit the “enemy camp.”

Barack Obama is the Commander-in Chief. As such, giving a speech to cadets at the country’s premiere military academy seems like an appropriate place. As for Matthew’s “enemy camp” comment, it is shameful. These men and women are pledging to defend the United States. If an individual sees these soldiers as “enemies,” then they themselves are enemies of what America stands for.

In a laughable moment, Dunn was able to keep a straight face as she said MSNBC isn’t biased. Her evidence? Former Republican Joe Scarborough is employed by the network. If hiring one person from another ideological background is the litmus test, then should Fox News meet that threshold by employing Geraldo Rivera?

Of course, Fox News is biased, and so is MSNBC. Fox has a conservative slant, while MSNBC proudly pushes the liberal agenda. Anita Dunn surely realizes this, but chooses not to acknowledge this because because she wants the typical person to believe that the glowing reports on MSNBC are the “truth” and not pure liberal propaganda.

Whether you agree or disagree with Barack Obama’s views, this focus on Fox News is beneath the office of the Presidency. Excluding one network from interviews, and sending administration officials out to be critical is petty. It’s nothing but a stunt to intimidate the media into providing complimentary coverage. Of course, this strategy will likely back-fire and result in Americans taking a closer look at what Barack Obama fears.

In a perfect world, the media would be 100% unbiased. They would cover every important story appropriately without prejudice and never bury some stories and over-emphasize others. They would approach each topic with indifference, in order to let readers come to their own conclusions. They would exist solely to gather and distribute information without any agenda other than the desire to have an informed citizenry. That should be the goal, but it is far from the reality.

I enjoy watching Fox News, but it certainly isn’t “fair and balanced,” as the network claims. There is certainly a conservative slant that cannot be denied. I hear this mentioned frequently, but what I don’t hear mentioned often is the liberal bias demonstrated by MSNBC. They behave exactly like Fox News. They just do so at the opposite end of the political spectrum. I use these two networks as examples, but there are certainly others…too many others.

Media biases have been discussed for quite some time, but they have gained more attention since Barack Obama was elected President. Barack Obama spent a recent Sunday morning discussing health-care on all the major networks, CNN, and Univision, but he conveniently skipped Fox News. It also isn’t unusual to see Fox reporters skipped at press conferences. My guess is that this is done for both punitive reasons and to prevent a “gotcha” moment where they attempt to put him on the spot. Things recently escalated further when criticism of Fox News made its way to the White House blog.

For just a moment, forget your political affiliations and your feelings about Barack Obama, and think in general terms. Is it appropriate for a sitting President to intentionally exclude one network, and to use a government blog to level criticism? It seems beneath the level of dignity and professionalism expected of the office. If you disagree, then think about this: Isn’t he playing into the hands of the conservative media? By intentionally ignoring them and casting them aside, he makes it look like he is afraid to answer the tough questions.

In times of disagreement, it’s usually best to address the other party and stand your ground. Barack Obama is simply avoiding those who disagree with him, rather than looking at these situations as opportunities to address criticisms. This closed-minded approach will come back to haunt him and end up further motivating his critics.
